Dakota Johnson in talks to play Madame Web for Sony’s Spider-Verse

Sources have reported to Deadline that Dakota Johnson is in talks to star in a Madame Web movie for Sony’s expanding Spider-Verse.

In the comics, Madame Web is depicted as an elderly woman with an autoimmune disorder and thus connected to a life support system that looked like a spider web. Due to her age and medical condition, she never actively fought any villains. For that reason, sources have stressed that it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders say that due to her psychic sensory powers, she is essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange.

The Orville moves Season 3 premiere to June 2^nd

Hulu has announced that the Season 3 premiere of The Orville has been pushed back to June 2. The new season was previously set to kick off on March 10.

Series creator and lead Seth MacFarlane said on Twitter: As occasionally happens, our show has been repositioned amidst the ever-changing television schedule landscape, which means that the wait will be just a bit longer. We’ve always promised you a television experience that will make it worth the wait, and we’re not wavering on that. We understand the frustration you’re feeling over more delays, so we want to give you a little taste of what’s to come.

Along with the statement, MacFarlane revealed a sneak peek of Season 3 footage, including the show’s new main titles.

Tales of the Walking Dead reveals its cast

AMC has announced the initial cast for Tales of the Walking Dead, their next spinoff series set in The Walking Dead universe. Anthony Edwards, Parker Posey, Terry Crews, Poppy Liu, and Jillian Bell have all been tapped to star in the episodic anthology series.

Each one-hour standalone episode of Tales of the Walking Dead will focus on both new and established characters set in the world of the original series, which is set to premiere this summer on AMC and AMC+.

Rockstar confirms that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in active development

In a recent Grand Theft Auto community update, Rockstar confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in active development.

The update from Rockstar reads: “With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. Donald Faison likely to be playing Booster Gold on Legends of Tomorrow

Donald Faison is set to appear in the season 7 finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as an unnamed mystery character seeking fame, fortune, and glory. While the character’s name is being kept under wraps, the provided description strongly suggests that Faison will be playing the time-travelling Booster Gold.

The official description reads: The Legends first encounter this character at a different phase of his career whose golden years are in the rearview mirror. He is a good guy deep down; his ego is looking for a boost that only fame, fortune, and glory can provide. While he claims to have been recruited to work for a mysterious time organization, he wasn’t offered much of a choice in the matter. As an unauthorized time traveler with high-profile aspirations, he developed a mischievous streak and cuts a few corners along the way to achieving his dreams. He knows all about the Legends of Tomorrow and finds them inspiring because they are the kind of heroes who started at the ground floor, as opposed to inheriting their powers from an alien planet, a spider bite, or wealthy parents. But the big question is whether his respect for the team is going to be able to help the Legends out of hot water or get them into hotter water!”

Writer hired for Dungeons & Dragons TV series

eOne has closed a deal with Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber to creatively oversee a flagship live-action television series based on Dungeons & Dragons. Thurber will write and direct the pilot script as well as executive produce the hourlong project.

Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a big focus for eOne following the company’s acquisition by Hasbro. The flagship live-action series is expected to serve as a cornerstone of the TV universe as it continues to expand.

Thurber commented on the news via Twitter, saying, “Boyhood dreams do come true.”

Respawn is making three more Star Wars games

EA has announced that Respawn Entertainment is making three more Star Wars games. The studio is working on a follow up to its hit 2019 action-adventure title Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, though it’s not clear if the upcoming game is a direct sequel.

A second title is a first-person shooter being overseen by a former Star Wars Battlefront producer. In addition, a strategy game produced by Respawn is on the way from Bit Reactor, a new third-party studio headed up by a developer who previously worked on the XCOM series.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will arrive on April 5^th

Two years after it was originally set to release, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will finally arrive on April 5^th. The long-awaited title from TT Games adapts all nine movies in the Skywalker Saga, and you’ll be able to choose which trilogy to start with.

There are new combat mechanics, including ways to string attacks together and defend yourself with counter moves in styles tailored to your favorite characters. Players will experience fresh blaster mechanics, with an over-the-shoulder perspective with a third-person aiming reticle, and a cover system. As expected, there will be a ton of lightsaber action, space dogfighting, and many opportunities to use Force powers.

Many levels will have multiple paths to explore and you’ll be able to take on side missions. Class-based abilities are upgradable and there are more than 300 playable characters to unlock. There’s also a Mumble Mode, which will replace intelligible voice lines with mumbling, for those who prefer their LEGO games in the classic style.

Murderville comes to Netflix on February 3^rd

Netflix has announced and debuted the first trailer for Murderville, a procedural crime improv comedy which is produced by and starring Will Arnett. Arnett plays Senior Detective Terry Seattle, who every day faces a new murder to solve with a celebrity guest star as his partner.

The catch is, the guest stars aren’t given a script. As they assist Terry clue by clue, they have to improvise their way through the case. In the end, it’s up to these celebrities alone to name the killer.

Based on the BAFTA award-winning BBC3 series Murder in Successville, the Arnett-led comedy will feature celebrity guests Conan O’Brien, Marshawn Lynch, Kumail Nanjiani, Annie Murphy, Sharon Stone, and Ken Jeong.

Murderville premieres on Netflix on February 3^rd.

Blizzard announces new survival game set in a new universe

Blizzard is getting into a new genre with the announcement that it’s working on a survival game. It seems that the project is in the early stages of development, so don’t expect any footage anytime soon.

The job posting from the company says that the survival game will be a place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived. A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored.

The one detail that was confirmed is that the game will be available on PC and console. With the recent acquisition of Blizzard by Microsoft, that could mean it will be console-exclusive to Xbox, but that remains to be seen.

Starting on February 1^st, PlayStation Plus members will be able to step into the octagon in EA Sports UFC 4 and storm the castles in Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-shot Adventure for PS4, as well as build parks in Planet Coaster: Console Edition for PS5.

Xbox Gold members can uncover a murderous conspiracy in Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Curse, run, jump, slide, or dash with Aerial_Knight’s Never Yield, fight back against terrorists in Hydrophobia, and fight against spiders, bugs, and more in Band of Bugs.

Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield explain why they returned for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spoiler warning if you haven’t yet seen Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In a recent interview with Deadline, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield revealed why they decided to return for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Maguire recalled his meeting with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal, saying, “In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies and what it meant I think to Amy and Kevin was apparent, and to me, when artists or people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that I just wanted to join that. And I’m a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing, but yes, I was also going, ‘well, what are we going to do?”

Apparently, getting Maguire onboard was also a big selling point for Garfield. Once he knew his predecessor had joined the film, Garfield was game as well.

“Well, I was just waiting to see if Tobey was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, well, I have no choice, you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. I’m a lemming for Tobey. But that was sincerely a big part of it when I was approached about it, and again, it’s similar to what Tobey was saying. It was like, oh, the intention feels very pure here, it actually feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story.”

Garfield added, “It wasn’t like they were just asking us to come and say hi and then leave again. But actually, have our presence being in service to Tom, being in service to Tom’s journey and where he is as Peter Parker, and I love the destiny feeling of the multiverse expanding in this film, and actually, without Tobey’s Peter and Andrew’s Peter being present for Tom’s Peter at this very moment, he may not become the Peter Parker that he’s supposed to become…Getting three Spider-Men together could go one of two ways, and I think it’s a testament to these guys that it went the way that it went, which was a brotherhood, which is just beautiful.”

Microsoft is acquiring Activision Blizzard

Microsoft has announced plans to acquire Activision Blizzard for a price of $68.7 billion. The deal would make the combined entity the third-largest game company by revenue and would put titles like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush under their umbrella. Part of the deal includes plans by Microsoft to add Activision Blizzard games to Game Pass.

The buyout is expected to close no later than June 2023 if regulators and Activision Blizzard shareholders greenlight the move. The board of directors for both companies have already approved the deal.

Microsoft didn’t say how many Activision Blizzard games would be Xbox-exclusive on consoles, or Windows-exclusive on computers.

The Cuphead Show to premiere on Netflix on February 18^th

Netflix has revealed that The Cuphead Show will premiere on February 18^th, along with debuting a brand-new trailer. Fans of the game will quickly recognize the 1930’s-influenced art style and the cast of characters for the 12-episode series.

The show is described as a character-driven comedy series following the unique misadventures of the lovable, impulsive scamp Cuphead and his cautious but easily-swayed brother Mugman.

The voice cast includes acting veterans Tru Valentino and Frank Todaro as Cuphead and Mugman, with Wayne Brady in the role of King Dice.

Star Trek shows get premiere dates and renewals

Paramount+ has revealed new season premiere dates and additional season pickup orders across the service’s Star Trek Universe series.

Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed for a fifth season. Season 4 will return with new episodes on Thursday, February 10^th.

Season two of Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Thursday, March 3^rd and a third season in currently in production.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a second season ahead of its first season debut, which will premiere on Thursday, May 5^th.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will return in Summer 2022 with a 10-episode third season, and has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Star Trek: Prodigy will conclude the first half of its first season on February 3^rd, with the second half of season one available starting later in 2022.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show gets a title

Amazon has revealed the title of its upcoming Lord of the Rings Series. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on the streamer this September 2^nd.

Showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay said in a statement, “This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Numenor and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen onscreen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will change art styles in each dimension

In an interview with Collider, Chris Miller and Phil Lord discussed the visual changes that we’ll be seeing in Across the Spider-Verse.

Miller said, “The idea that we’d be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically to have each world have its own art style, and to be able to push the folks at ImageWorks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand. Seeing the development of that stuff is breathtaking, and really, it’s the reason we keep doing it, because it’s so hard to get it right.”

Lord added that their goal is always to push animation in directions it hasn’t gone yet on every project.

The CW developing Justice U for David Ramsey

Justice U is a new series in development for The CW’s Arrowverse, with David Ramsey’s John Diggle set to lead the pack.

In the new series, after years of fighting alongside masked heroes, Diggle embarks on a new mission to recruit five young meta humans to live undercover as freshmen at a prestigious university. There he will oversee their education and train them to become the heroes of tomorrow.

In addition to starring in the series, if it is picked up to pilot, Ramsey will also direct.

Fortnite Chapter 3 brings a new map, new gameplay, and Spider-Man

Epic has confirmed details for Chapter 3 of Fortnite, along with releasing a trailer that shows what to expect in its first season, titled Flipped.

In the Chapter 2 finale, the island flipped over to reveal a new map that includes chaotic weather like rainstorms, lightning, and tornadoes that can suck you in and throw you out. Along with the new map, Spider-Man is making his way to Fortnite. The wall-crawler’s influence goes beyond just a character skin though, as the Daily Bugle stands prominently on the new map, and swinging mechanics have also been introduced through his web-shooters, which will be available starting on December 11th. Later on in the season, you’ll be able to unlock Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as The Foundation, the leader of The Seven.

Other changes for Chapter 3 include a new sliding mechanic to move and dodge faster, camps to help your squad heal and store items that persist between matches, the ability to earn XP beyond battle royale, and a Victory Crown to hold onto if you keep winning.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse drops first footage of 2-part sequel

Sony has revealed the first look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). The film serves as the first installment of the now two-part sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Across the Spider-Verse will chronicle Miles Morales as he teams up with Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, and Spider-Gwen to face off with a powerful super-villain.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller said of the sequel, “Miles’ story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We’re working on them both as we speak. Part Two will be out sometime in 2023. We will sleep again in 2024.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is scheduled to release in theaters October 7^th, 2022.

PlayStation Plus and Xbox Gold free games for December

Here are the free games for PlayStation Plus and Xbox Gold members for December.

Available starting December 7^th, PlayStation Plus members will get access to the looter-shooter Godfall: Challenger Edition for PS5 & PS4. On the PS4, they can join the Justice Syndicate in LEGO DC Super-Villains and step into the action-RPG Mortal Shell. Three bonus PS VR titles will also be in the mix, including The Persistence, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, and Until You Fall.

Xbox Gold members will be able to plot prison breaks in The Escapists 2, run an island nation in Tropico 5 – Penultimate Edition, take out an orc army in Orcs Must Die!, and battle bizarre creatures in Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet.

Spider-Man producer says another Tom Holland-led trilogy will happen

In a recent interview with Fandango, Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal discussed the future of the franchise, seemingly confirming another Tom Holland-led trilogy.

Pascal said, “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – this is not the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”

Following that interview, Tom Holland was asked about Pascal’s comments, to which he replied, “Listen, all I’ll say is we have some very, very exciting things to be talking about. I don’t know what those things are or what they will transpire to mean. But it looks like it’s an incredibly bright future ahead, and as I’ve said before, Spider-Man will forever live in me.”

Jessica Henwick was forced to choose between The Matrix and Shang-Chi

It looks like Jessica Henwick almost ended up in Marvel’s Shang-Chi before taking her role in The Matrix 4.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress said that she was already lined up for a chemistry test on The Matrix when she was approached about a potential role in Shang-Chi.

Henwick said, “The studios knew about the other offers, and both of them gave me the offer on the stipulation that I could only audition for one or the other. And there was no guarantee that I would get either. It was a red pill, blue pill moment for me.”

It’s unknown which role Henwick would have been up for in Shang-Chi, but she said her previous experience as Colleen Wing on Iron Fist helped her to choose The Matrix over another MCU project.

“I’ve obviously done Marvel TV, so I was already in the universe. I knew that joining The Matrix is not an opportunity that you get every day. Lana has had so many offers to make more Matrix films. I just knew it was now or never. Whereas, obviously, Marvel is a huge, wonderful company that makes films very, very regularly.”

Fall Guys for Switch and Xbox delayed to 2022

While the latest Season of Fall Guys has just begun, Nintendo Switch and Xbox gamers will have to wait a bit longer to join in on the fun.

Developer Mediatonic has once again delayed the battle royale on those platforms, with a release now set for sometime in 2022.

They said in a statement, “We know everyone’s excited about Fall Guys coming to Nintendo Switch and Xbox, with good reason. There’s been a lot of speculation on social media connecting these new console releases to the Season 6 launch and we want to clarify that that’s not the case so no one’s left confused looking for the game on these platforms. Thank you for being patient with us; it’s one of our top priorities in active development and we can’t wait to share more details with you in 2022.”

Sylvester Stallone is returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Sylvester Stallone has confirmed that he is returning to the MCU for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

In a post on Instagram, Stallone shared two behind-the-scenes process videos. They show him using a machine that captures his facial expressions so the filmmakers can duplicate them if the actor isn’t around.

His character, Stakar Ogord, also known as Starhawk in the comics, was introduced in an early scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as a high-ranking Ravager.

Twitch is now available on Switch

Twitch has officially released an app for Nintendo Switch, meaning you can now watch the livestreaming service on the console. The free app offers the same core functionality as Twitch on other consoles, including on-demand videos.

Unfortunately, while you can watch Twitch on the console, you can’t broadcast from it. You’ll still have to route video through a PC if you’re more interested in creating content than watching it.

Square Enix reveals Spider-Man’s outfits for Marvel’s Avengers

Square Enix has revealed not only the look of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers, but also highlighted some of his alternate costumes that will be available.

For the PlayStation exclusive event, Peter Parker will form friendships with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow in his civilian identity as he tries to help them take down AIM. However, Spidey’s relationship with the Avengers may not be as easy to manage. While his comic book and MCU counterparts have been Avengers, this appears to be the first time that the Spidey of this world has joined the team.

In addition to his default look for the game, the company shared multiple alternate costumes, including a classic suit that inspired their new design, the Bugle Boy Suit featuring jeans, a sweater vest, and his costume mask, the Secret War Suit from that limited series, the Spider-Armor Mark I Suit based on the design from Web of Spider-Man #100, the Spider-Armor Mark III Suit also referred to as the Ends of the Earth suit, and the Noir Suit with its black leather trench coat, haphazardly stitched mask, and aviator goggles.

Spider-Man will be added to Marvel’s Avengers on PS4 and PS5 on November 30^th.

Spider-Man comes to Marvel’s Avengers as a PlayStation exclusive

Crystal Dynamics has finally revealed when Spider-Man will arrive in Marvel’s Avengers video game. The webslinger will join the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game on November 30^th as a PlayStation exclusive.

There will be a hero event to accompany Spidey’s debut. After discovering AIM’s plan to make its Synthoid army unstoppable, Spider-Man teams up with the Avengers to tackle the threat. Unfortunately, Crystal Dynamics hasn’t yet offered a proper look at its take on the hero.

The studio initially said it would add Spider-Man early this year, but that didn’t pan out. Along with Spider-Man, an update later this month will add more cosmetic items (including outfits inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe), a new type of enemy called Echoes and a Klaw raid. The resource and gear upgrade systems will also be reworked and the power level cap will be increased.

Jenna Dewan’s Lucy Lane returning for Superman & Lois

Jenna Dewan is set to reprise her role as Lucy Lane for the upcoming second season of Superman & Lois. The actress, who will be credited as a recurring role, appeared as the sister of Lois Lane on Supergirl during the first season of the CBS turned CW drama. This will be her first time back in the Arrowverse since 2016, and will mark the first time that Lucy and Lois Lane have shared the screen in this continuity.

Chloe Zhao confirms a cameo in an Eternals post-credits scene

Spoiler warning if you haven’t yet seen Marvel’s Eternals.

Like most Marvel movies, Eternals contained two additional scenes throughout the end credits. The second of these features Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman approaching and opening a case that reveals a sword inside. As he prepares to touch the sword, Dane says, “I’m sorry, I have to try.” He’s then interrupted by the voice of an offscreen character who says, “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”

In an interview with Fandom, director Chloe Zhao confirmed the identity of this voice as Mahershala Ali’s Blade, making this the official debut of the daywalker in the MCU. What this means for the future of Blade’s story remains to be seen.

Sony rebrands their Marvel movies as Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Plans have been in place for awhile to tie all of Sony’s comic book properties together, and in May of last year it was announced that the franchise would be known as the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, which isn’t really a catchy or efficient title. The studio has now announced an official rebrand for the effort titled Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Sony’s current deal with Marvel Studios only includes Spider-Man: No Way Home and one MCU film to be named later. Regardless, it’s possible that Sony’s MCU contract could still be renewed for additional movies. Holland’s contract with Sony and Marvel expires after No Way Home, so it’s likely that the next batch of negotiations will result in the actor jumping between the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, given that his character’s name is right in the branding.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is currently only one movie old, with Venom the sole effort that’s managed to hit theaters so far. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will mark the second installment, while Jared Leto’s Morbius will premiere on January 28 next year, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter coming on January 13, 2023.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop gets first look images and premiere date

Netflix has revealed the first look images of John Cho and the rest of the main cast for their upcoming adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, as well as announcing a premiere date of Friday, November 19^th.

Based on Shinichir? Watanabe’s cult anime series, Cowboy Bebop follows a group of misfit bounty hunters, led by Spike Spiegel as they search for the galaxy’s most valuable criminals. Mustafa Shakir also stars as Spike’s trusted co-pilot Jet Black and Daniella Pineda as the highly-skilled bounty hunter Faye Valentine.

Netflix’s images also reveal the Bebop in its mechanical glory, as well as Ein, the experiment-turned-pet Corgi.

Brandon Routh will star in the Magic: The Gathering series

Netflix’s animated Magic: The Gathering series is running full-steam ahead. Set to premiere in late 2022, Brandon Routh has been announced to lead the voice cast.

Picked up straight to series in June 2019, the show unites familiar and well-loved Planeswalkers for Magic fans and introduces new characters to tell a new story. Routh will voice the role of Gideon, an unfalteringly heroic Planeswalker in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have released a new trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series. Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!

Confirmed Spider-Man: Far From Home cast members include Tom Holland as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, plus Zendaya as “MJ,” Jacob Batalon as Ned, with Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio. New additions include comedian J.B. Smoove and Numan Acar as Dimitri. MCU veterans Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders will also join Holland’s Spider-Man sequel as Nick Fury and Maria Hill respectively.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is directed by Jon Watts and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, all returning from Spider-Man: Homecoming. The movie will hit theaters on July 2.

Steve Ditko passes at 90-years-old

Artist Steve Ditko, an iconic name in the comic book industry, has passed away at 90 years old. Ditko began drawing and publishing comics in the 1950s, working alongside Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Ditko was eventually enlisted by Stan Lee to help him create a new superhero character, who would become Spider-Man. Spidey made his debut in Amazing Fantasy #15 in August 1962, and he continued to draw the webslinger from issues #1 through #38. Along the way, Ditko co-created many fan favorite villains including Doctor Ocotopus, Vulture, Electro, Scorpion, Kraven the Hunter, The Lizard, Mysterio, Sandman, and The Green Goblin. Other characters within the Spider-verse created by Ditko include Aunt May, J. Jonah Jameson, Flash Thompson, Betty Brant, Harry Osborn, and Mary Jane Watson.

Ditko’s fingerprints are all over other Marvel Comics characters as well, as he also co-created Doctor Strange with Stan Lee, along with him villains Dormammu and Baron Mordo.

Later in his career, Ditko moved to DC Comics, where he co-created characters like The Creeper, Hawk and Dove, the Ted Kord version of Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, and The Question.

Idris Elba cast as villain in Hobbs and Shaw

Golden Globe winner Idris Elba is joining the cast of the Fast & Furious spin-off titled Hobbs and Shaw, which pairs Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with Jason Statham. Elba is set to appear as the villain of the film, which is set for release on August 2, 2019.

Miles Teller joins Top Gun sequel as Goose’s Son

Miles Teller has joined the cast of Top Gun 2 to play the role of Goose’s adult son. Those who have seen Top Gun remember Goose as being best friends and wingman to Tom Cruise’s Maverick. Top Gun 2 is said to be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters along with exploring the end of the era of dogfighting.

Jim Carrey set to play Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog movie

Deadline is reporting that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has found its villain with the addition of comedian Jim Carrey, who will play Robotnik in the film. Carrey joins a cast for the live action/animation hybrid that includes Tika Sumpter and James Marsden.

Jared Leto to star in Sony’s Morbius the Living Vampire movie

According to Heat Vision, Oscar-winner Jared Leto has signed on with Sony to star in a Morbius the Living Vampire movie. Originally Dr. Michael Morbius, the scientist tried to cure his rare blood disease only to become afflicted with a form of vampirism that gave him superior strength, fangs, and a taste for plasma. The character fought Spider-Man several times, though eventually earned several of his own books where he had a more heroic arc. In the comics, he also has an ongoing feud with Blade the Vampire Hunter.

Life is Strange 2 to debut on September 27th

Studio DONTNOD has revealed that the first episode of their highly anticipated sequel to Life is Strange is set to debut on September 27^th, 2018, with four more episodes to follow. In the meantime, you can play a free game released by the studio entitled The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, which was announced at E3 and takes place in the Life is Strange universe.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask. Shameik Moore, star of The Get Down and Dope, voices Miles Morales in the film, and he is joined by Liev Schreiber as Kingping, Mahershala Ali as Miles’ Uncle Aaron, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ father Jefferson, Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ mother Rio, Lily Tomlin as Aunt May, with Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen, and Jake Johnson as Peter Parker.

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War will debut in theaters on May 6, 2016. The film has a running time of 2 hours and 27 minutes, making it the longest Marvel movie to date.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have announced that Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in their next Spider-Man film, which is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017. Jon Watts has been set to direct the feature.

Producer Amy Pascal said of the casting, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin [Feige] and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Tonight, I watched the series finale of my favorite show of all time, and couldn’t help tearing up just as I did when I first saw it. Rewatching the series from the beginning over the last few years has reminded me of how important it is to me. Growing up, my love for the show resulted in me being picked on and made fun of. It was one of many reasons I felt like an outsider, as being a geek wasn’t a mainstream thing like it is now. On the other hand, it also served as a way to bond with one of my longest and closest friends who I consider a part of my family to this day. It also opened my mind to the possibilities of a better future, as Star Trek has always taken an optimistic view of humanity, showing us how good we could become. During the recent years I’ve spent rewatching the show, I’ve also had the privilege of meeting Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, John de Lancie, and most importantly LeVar Burton, who has always been a hero of mine. I try to introduce the show to those I care about, if I think they’d be interested, because I feel like I’m not just sharing a television show, but a piece of what makes me who I am. I had put off watching the finale for a week or so after finishing everything else because I didn’t want it to be over again, but as they say, all good things… #StarTrek #TheNextGeneration #StarTrekTNG #Trekkie #geek

Looks like million dollar corporations can play nicely with each other. According to a recent post on Marvel.com, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios have officially reached a deal to bring Spider-Man into an upcoming Marvel title and to collaborate on the next installment of the Spider-Man films slated for July 28, 2017. Negotiations had been ongoing since December of 2014 but no official word had been released until now.

Sony Pictures has had control over the Spider-Man movie franchise since Marvel sold the film rights in the early 2000s. While Sony will still have control over the movie rights and thus have the final say regarding future film decisions, it is great to see the possibility of the Friendly Neighborhood wallcrawler swinging into what will likely be Captain America: Civil War. While Spidey served a major role in the source material, it remains to be seen what role he will play in the film adaptation.

The same can be said about other Marvel characters making official cameos or appearances in future Spider-Man films if this friendly relationship is able to thrive. To clarify, Marvel will not be receiving the rights back from Sony at this time.

At last announcement, it was unclear what exactly Sony’s plans are for the next movie in its Spider-Man franchise as both a Sinister Six and a female-centered spin-off (most likely Black Cat) have been said to be in the works as possible titles before The Amazing Spider-Man 3. It is also unclear whether or not Andrew Garfield will be reprising his role of Spider-Man in any future appearance of the character.

While there is certainly a lot of money to be made, it is nice to see what could lead to the biggest movie experience for Marvel fans ever. Could this deal put pressure on Fox to renegotiate bringing the X-Men or the Fantastic Four on screen with their Marvel superhero brethren? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

If you love Marvel and you love the LEGO videogame series, you’re in luck. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games, The LEGO Group and Marvel Entertainment announced today that LEGO Marvel Super Heroes will be available beginning Fall 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Windows PC, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, and PlayStation Vita. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is the first installment in the highly successful LEGO videogame franchise to feature Marvel characters.

The game offers an original storyline in which Nick Fury calls upon Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine and other heroes spanning the Marvel Universe to save Earth from such threats as the vengeance of Loki and the hunger of Galactus, Devourer of Worlds. LEGO and Marvel fans will enjoy classic LEGO videogame adventure and humor, while playing as their favorite Marvel characters.

“Fans of both LEGO and Marvel have wanted this game for years, and we’re addressing that demand with more Marvel Universe characters than ever in a console game,” said TQ Jefferson, Vice President, Games Production, Marvel Entertainment. “If you’re a fan of Spider-Man, the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy or scores of other Marvel characters, this is the game for you.”

In LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, players will unlock more than 100 characters from across the Marvel Universe, including fan favorites like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Deadpool, Loki and Galactus! The game will pack in a plethora of super-cool character abilities, combat-like action sequences, epic battle scenes, puzzle-solving and a unique story told with playful LEGO humor.

1) It’s an A.D.D. nightmare

I can only assume the quick cuts, pacing, and constant assaults on my senses are the result of an overstimulated youth. Taking a nod from childish anime (and not in a good way), Ultimate Spider-Man is an anxiety-inducing cavalcade of confusion. If this had been on TV during the Saturday morning cartoon-era of my youth, I may have grown up developing abnormal heart palpitations.

2) The Spider-Bike

For what reason does Spider-Man need a motorcycle that shoots webs aside from toy sales? I’m not sure, but if that’s the precedent we’re setting, Superman needs a jet and The Flash needs a NASCAR racer. Why use superpowers when you can get a vehicle that mimics the thing that makes you special? If I wanted specialized vehicles I’d load up a copy of M.A.S.K. Batman’s one of the few superheroes who gets to play around in the cool vehicle department, not Spider-Man.

3) Guest heroes and villains are treated like clowns

One good thing Ultimate Spider-Man attempts to do is bring in lots of characters from the Marvel universe. Unfortunately, just about every time one of them shows up, they’re part of something foolish. Taskmaster disguises himself as a gym teacher during one episode to infiltrate Peter’s high school and find out the true identity of Spider-Man. Not only is his disguise stupid and stereotypical, but in one scene he appears to be doing calisthenics in the background for no good reason while the other kids are chatting. When Wolverine appears, they throw him and Spidey into a horrible Freaky Friday parody. Thor shows up in another episode, only to be turned into a frog for the majority of it. Yes… a frog.

4) Pandering to the audience and horrible cutaways

When Deadpool does it in the comics, it’s funny and refreshing. When Spider-Man does it in Ultimate Spider-Man, it comes across as holding the audience’s hand… and it happens every 30 seconds. Let’s dial it back Marvel. All the constant freezing is doing is slowing down the story progression. Ferris Bueller, Parker Lewis, and Zack Morris would all prefer it if you left the fourth wall breaking tricks to the experts. And just because Family Guy is popular doesn’t mean that type of cutaway humor is going to work everywhere else. I don’t need scenes of Spider-Man dressed as a maid cleaning up after a fat Taskmaster in the middle of my superhero shows.

NOTE: There are fans who are editing the show, removing the cutaway scenes, and releasing them to the public. I’ve watched a couple, and they prove the point that the cutaways add nothing.

5) Spider-Man: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For some reason Spider-Man alone wasn’t enough this time around. Instead of enjoying the adventures of someone whose character is almost always on his own, Marvel decided to team him up with a bunch of equally obnoxious heroes. Even more, Spidey is leading the team under the employment of S.H.I.E.L.D. A lot of the danger from being a vigilante fades away when you give your hero the security net of a technological super spy organization. If I want to watch a team show, I’ll watch the Avengers cartoon. Let’s leave Spider-Man on his own.

And to think, they canceled The Spectacular Spider-Man while this crapfest is getting a second season. For shame.

The Amazing Spider-Man, opening July 3rd, is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

In a recent Comic-Con annual magazine, director Marc Webb shared some insight into his vision for The Amazing Spider-Man.

In regards to this movie compared to Sam Raimi’s trilogy, Webb said:

It’s really important for us to be able to communicate that this isn’t a remake of Sam Raimi’s movie. There’s a new territory, there’s a new villain, it’s a different Peter Parker.

When asked about the seemingly darker tone of the film, Webb assured us that Spidey would remain true to his wise-cracking roots:

There’s this trickster quality we were very keen on exploring, with that humor and that fun and that wisecracking stuff. We wanted to keep that alive, but we wanted it to be realistic. We wanted that humor to come from a real place. My aim was to create a world where you could feel all those emotions. There are certainly darker, more intense feelings in this movie. There is betrayal, there is tragedy, but there’s also humor and romance. So it’s a very complex bouquet of emotions, but what you have to tread on is what feels authentic and what feels real, and you have to earn those different emotions. There are moments of furiousness and gravity, absolutely. But are there moments of humor and levity and whimsy? Absolutely. Andrew was really great. He used this term to describe Peter Parker in Spider-Man and Spider-Man in particular: he’s a trickster. He was like “How would Spider-Man web this guy? He’d give him a wedgy or he’d do some awful graffiti.” There’s a punk rock quality to Peter Parker that’s really irreverent and fun and that’s something that Andrew embodies in a way that we haven’t seen before. Certainly the materials that have come out have a darker sentiment or there’s a darker projection, but we’re very keen on staying loyal to the humor of Spider-Man.

Anyways, here are the top ten moments I feel shaped 2011 in the world of comic books:

#10 – Mark Waid on Daredevil; Relaunched with a new #1

Oh Matt Murdock, the last couple of years have not been kind. From having your identity almost revealed, your wife getting driven insane and institutionalized, being put in prison and finally going nutzo and declaring yourself the new Kingpin of the underworld. After that where do you go? Enter Mark Waid, one of the most respected and best writers in comics history. He decided enough is enough, Matt had been through enough and famously said at a convention “I want to make it so you don’t feel like you need a stiff drink after you read an issue of Daredevil.” Waid’s idea was to bring Matt through to the other side, bring out the swashbuckling, more colorful Daredevil. After a decade of Bendis, Brubaker and Diggle putting Matt through high hell, its refreshing to see this side of Matt, but the undertones are still there. This book is a joy to read every month, with the amazing throwback art of Marcos Martin and others. It really is just a fun, well written super-hero book and in this industry right now what more can you ask for? #9 – Scott Snyder on Batman 

Scott Snyder IS the next Geoff Johns. That’s what many people are saying and I am inclined to agree. With the launch of DC’s New 52, Scott Snyder got to take the reigns of the main Batman title and start it with a new #1 (which hasn’t been done since 1940). Batman #1-4 (what’s been released so far) are far and away the best Batman stories written in years. It washed the horrible taste of Grant Morrison out of my mouth. Yes, he acknowledges Morrison’s stuff, but Batman goes back to being a ‘Dark Detective’ instead of a multi-colored leader of an army of Batmen. Each issue is better than the last. Snyder, who got his start on American Vampire and Detective Comics for Vertigo and DC respectively, is an AMAZING writer. Add to that the gorgeous art from Greg Capullo (Spawn) and you have THE best Batman book on the stands and one of the best in a long time. Bottom line… check out Batman #1-4 at your nearest comic retailer. Trust me.

#8 – X-Force: The Dark Angel Saga

First of all, if you are not reading Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender than do yourself a favor… kick yourself and go buy every issue! Seriously. It’s probably, if not the best X-book published, but one of the very best comics period. Every issue will kick your ass! One of the big storylines from 2011 which just finished was the The Dark Angel Saga. Basically Archangel has now taken over where Apocalypse left off and feels the need to cleanse the world of the weak. In order to help their teammate, X-Force must travel to the Age of Apocalypse (a famous alternate reality where Professor X died and instead Apocalypse took over) to find the dark entity that has his soul. While they are there, they encounter familiar friends who may no longer be alive in their own reality, and at the end of it a team member is killed and lost for good. A fantastic thrill ride. You can pick up the storyline split into 2 hardcovers. Book 1 is out now and Book 2 will be released on March 14th.

#7 –  War of the Green Lanterns

War of the Green Lanterns was DC’s big attempt to cash in on the excitement for the Green Lantern movie in June. (We all know how that movie turned out.) It was a ten-issue storyline that crossed over between Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, and Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors. It was spearheaded by keeper of the GL lore, Geoff Johns, and a multitude of talented artists. The story is how the Green Lanterns become mind controlled by the rogue guardian Krona and leaves Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner and John Stewart left to deal with this. The cool twist is since they can’t use their Green Lanterns anymore, they have to choose one of the other Corps to join (Red Lanterns, Blue Lanterns, Indigo Lanterns, Sinestro Corps, Star Stapphires) and some of the choices are SHOCKING. At the end, the main Green Lantern of Earth (Sector 2814) is NO longer Hal Jordan. It’s a huge event with obvious long lasting effects to the mythos. #6 – X-Men: Schism/X-Men: Regenesis 

2011 was a huge year for the X-Men universe, with X-Men: First Class rejuvenating the franchise in film and with Schism and then Regenesis retooling the X-Men in time for next year’s HUGE “Avengers vs. X-Men” event. Before X-Men: Schism began this past summer, Cyclops had united all the X-Men in San Francisco under a new island to live on called Utopia which was basically a safe-haven for all mutants. At the beginning of Schism #1 a major anti-mutant attack is unleashed on Utopia and it tears the X-Men right down the middle on what to do. It ends up with Cyclops and Wolverine facing off and having a huge parting of the ways. With X-Men: Regenesis, the X-Men are split in half. Half of the team decides to stay in Utopia with Cyclops and continue to try to live in peace, while the other half follow Wolverine off Utopia to New York where he’s had the X-Mansion rebuilt in tribute to Jean Grey and decides to reopen the school for young mutants with him as headmaster. X-Men: Schism has been collected into a hardcover that will be released on Jan 11th, 2012 and X-Men: Regenesis has two main titles: Uncanny X-Men by Kieron Gillen and Carlos Pacheco and Wolverine and the X-Men by Jason Aaaron and Chris Bachelo, both of which are up to issue #3.

#5 – The New Ultimate Spider-Man

In one of the most controversial stories of 2011, Marvel Comics decided to kill off Peter Parker. Wait… not THAT Peter Parker. The Peter Parker of the Ultimate Universe (think of it as an alternate Marvel Universe, cause it is). Nonetheless, this character had been around since 2000 and was written by Brian Michael Bendis every step of the way. But, finally, Bendis decided to end Parker’s story and start a new one with a new Spider-Man. A Spider-Man who is multicultural. Enter Miles Morales, who is African American/Hispanic. Then enter the internet cracking in half with controversy. To me, Spider-Man is all of us and I can see the point Bendis was making. The way Parker dies and becomes the Uncle Ben in Miles’ case to influence him to become the new Spider-Man is an absolutely seamless and beautifully told story. Bendis masterfully pulls a full circle story. I won’t get into the specifics, but it’s a definite must read. To read the demise of Peter Parker, check out the Ultimate Spider-Man: Death of Spider-Man hardcover that came out on November 2nd. To start and keep up with the new adventures of Miles Morales as Spider-Man, check out the monthly Ultimate Spider-Man comic, of which issue #5 just came out. Or, if you are trade-waiter… the hardcover of the first 6 issues comes out in February.

#4 –  Fear Itself

Fear Itself was Marvel’s “event” for 2011, and the first line-wide crossover they have done since 2008’s Secret Invasion. Written by Matt Fraction with art by Stuart Immonen, the story deals with the rise of an Asgardian fear deity named “The Serpent” who causes global panic on Earth. The twist is the Serpent, we find out, is attempting to reclaim the throne to Asgard he lost by his brother Odin. The entire Marvel Universe is faced with fear and doubt including the Super-heroes themselves. Obviously, like past Marvel events like Civil War, this is Marvel’s way to touch on the real fear going on in the world right now. The series goes through many twists and turns in its seven issues and there was also multiple tie-ins and miniseries that deal with pretty much every Marvel character. Some heroes don’t make it out unscathed, and it does have lasting impact on the Marvel Universe. The event itself is being collected in a hardcover available on Jan 18, 2012, with the minis and tie-ins to follow shortly after.

#3 –  Spider-Island

Spider-Island was the Spider-Man mega event of 2011 that ran through Amazing Spider-Man, Venom and numerous one-shots and minis. It is a basic story of what happens when… all the people in Manhattan gain Spider-Man’s abilities. The core bit to the story is that not all have been taught “with great power comes great responsibility.” Can Spider-Man keep the peace or will havoc ensue? As you read that I’m sure you are thinking what everyone thought: “This is going to be silly and terrible.” In fact, it was quite the opposite, as it was a really strong character piece about what makes Peter Parker special and why not just anyone with spider-powers can be Spider-Man. It is written by Dan Slott, who has been hitting it out of the park on Amazing Spider-Man for the past couple years and is without a doubt one of the BEST writers of all time on Spidey. It features some great moments such as seeing what J. Jonah Jameson and more importantly Mary Jane would be like with the powers of Spider-Man. This comes highly recommended and is without a doubt my favorite “event” of 2011. It’s currently being collected in hardcover for release on Jan 25, 2012.

#2 – Flashpoint

Flashpoint was supposed to be just DC’s big summer event for 2011. It turned out to be much, much more. Flashpoint was a mini-series that ran from May-Aug 2011 with a 5-issue main series and tons of tie-in minis and one-shots. The basic plot is that Barry Allen wakes up in an altered reality where the Flash never existed, Captain Cold is Central City’s protector, Wonder Woman and Aquaman have been married, Batman exists but kills and is it even Bruce Wayne?, Superman and the Justice League don’t exist and Cyborg is the world’s greatest hero. Everyone believed it would be a standard alternate reality thing where Barry has to find his way back to his own world. It was then revealed that this IS the world now. Everything has changed. Half the fun is finding out what changed, how it did and WHY. Finally, even when things end… the world isn’t restored to how it was before. Highly recommended. Geoff Johns is the best Flash writer and Andy Kuburt kills on the art duties. You can pick up the Flashpoint hardcover now.

#1 –  DC Comics 52 Reboot

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about this… even the non-comic book readers have. In the biggest move in more than a decade, DC Comics decided in August to reboot their entire comic book universe (for the most part) and start 52 comics at issue #1. While much speculation and guessing was thrown around, it turned out to be a MASSIVE success, the likes of which the comic industry hasn’t seen in some time. It got people reading comics again, people talking about comics again, and an influx of new readers as a result. For the first time since sales estimates have been recorded, DC Comics won the market share over competitor Marvel Comics. Marvel has since laid off many employees and is underway in cancelling a number of their lower selling titles due to this. The dominance of Marvel Comics in the comic industry was over. In September, the first full month of the new 52, they had an outlandish 20 out of 25 of the top selling comics for that month. It was unheard of. The reboot itself brought with it many changes to the DC characters, some major and some minor. The biggest announcement was the all-star creative team on Justice League of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. The most effected was DC’s flagship character Superman. Wiped away was the marriage of Clark Kent and Lois Lane that had existed since 1996. Gone was Jonathan and Martha Kent being alive. Gone was the familiar costume. Reestablished was the love triangle of Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and Superman, with Lois’ knowledge of his secret gone. Other heroes were majorly changed as well. Barry Allen, The Flash, was no longer married to Iris Allen (is there any comic marriages intact now besides Reed and Sue Richards?). Probably the most controversial change to a character was that of Barbara Gordon no longer being the wheelchair-bound Oracle and instead walking and re-donning the cowl of Batgirl. The two characters least effected by the reboot were Batman and Green Lantern. Pretty much it was seen as if it ain’t broke, so don’t fix it. Geoff Johns would continue the story of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps from where he left off. Batman was given a new creative team but all previous continuity had still happened. DC Comics dominated the comic industry from September 2011 to the very end of 2011. The question now is… will their reboot still bring them the market share in 2012 or will Marvel have a major league comeback in store for them? To check the reboot out (they are on issue #4 of all 52 titles) go to your local comic store or check out the AMAZING New 52 Hardcover that contains all 52 #1s in one ginormous 1000 page hardcover.

Last year, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions returned our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to greatness with a lengthy, streamlined crawl that brought the visions of four different universes to fruition on next-gen consoles. This years follow up, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, unfortunately stumbles a few times in an attempt to capture the formula which made last year’s game the hit it was. In fact, it stumbles to the point that sometimes you would swear Peter Parker and Miguel O’Hara shared a few drinks before embarking on this adventure to save two parallel realities from ultimate destruction.

Plot: In order to keep would-be players in suspense, the storyline of Edge of Time (written by veteran Spider-Man 2099 scribe Peter David) revolves around the present and the future of the Amazing Spider-Man universe, and that of his counterpart, Spider-Man 2099. Walker Sloan, an Alchemax employee of the future, attempts to alter his reality by going back in time to found Alchemax. Sloan succeeds, and the time line is altered, leading to an alternate New York being created. It’s time for both Spider-Men to swing into action and fix what has been done.

Overall, the story serves its purpose, with what seems like a lot of heavy research done in order to give fan service to loyal Marvel fans of both Spider-Men. I enjoyed the telling, and the voice actors really added a flair to some of the dialogue, primarily Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spidey 2099), who voiced the Amazing Spider-Man in the 1990’s cartoon.

Gameplay: With last year’s game revolving around 4 different universes, Edge of Time attempts to streamline the players experience with two Spider-Men, and two upgradeable move sets. Collecting orbs and large experience boosts enable the player to customize each character, with a third shared move set providing basic moves for both Spider-Men. Unfortunately, with all the upgrading and moves, I found myself focusing more on hammering the square and triangle button to defeat enemies, while using my decoy or acceleration (both dodge-style moves) to take out enemies. In essence, glorified button mashing. This is fine for a game of this type, but why bother with the elaborate move sets? Never did I find myself using at least half of the moves I upgraded, compared to last year where I used just about everything in Shattered Dimensions. Aside from orbs, golden spider tokens make their return to upgrade abilities such as acceleration and decoy, health meter, and health regeneration.

Combat, as stated, is a bit of a button mash festival against the typical small, medium, and large groups of minions Alchemax throws at you. Finding your groove in combat, you can rack up some impressive combos (past 200 hits) in tandem with your decoy, acceleration, and web zip smash. The problem is, when playing as Spidey 2099, I felt overpowered against enemies, given he has a shield that absorbs hits and his attacks generated more damage than the Amazing’s did. The biggest disappointment was, however, that there was no opportunity to choose a path where actions in the past or future change anything. You essentially just play through the sixteen chapters, alternating between both Spider-Men, until you reach the end. The overall challenge of the game was a bit lacking, with some really frustrating enemy encounters. By far the worst were the free fall sequences when playing as 2099, with poor collision detection and imprecise control at times.

Replayability: If you enjoy beating the same enemies over and over again, a second play through might be warranted. The meat of the game is really in the web of challenges, where medals can be earned. Silver or Gold will earn you unlocks such as concept art and costumes, as well as golden spiders that unlock character abilities. The real incentive to do well in the challenges and earn at least silver medals is the myriad of costumes, ranging from Spidey’s “Future Foundation”, “Big TIme”, “Spider Armor” and “1602.” The list is huge with over thirteen costumes to unlock. A hard mode opens up once you beat the game, but you’ll still be fighting the same enemies over and over again.

Overall: Edge of Time is ultimately a button mashing beat ’em up that attempts to capture the essence of Shattered Dimensions from last year. While it does a good job with dialogue and storytelling, the gameplay is just lacking. Add in the frustrating free fall sequences, and you don’t have the worthy successor to Shattered Dimensions. That being said, the web of challenges and unlockable costumes definitely give fan service to die-hard Spider-Man fans. Unfortunately, with the fall gaming season in full swing, people may not be apt to picking this one up because of all the other top shelf games coming out (Arkham City, anyone?) For the casual player, Edge of Time is a good weekend diversion, but I recommend only making the purchase if you are the Chameleon and just robbed a bank, and want to part quickly with your gaming dollar.

Edge of Time starts out with a bang, and without spoiling any of the plot, I’ll just say pressing the start button hurls you into combat with Anti-Venom (Eddie Brock). The brief glimpse of combat I caught here seems to be a marked improvement from the last game, and I can tell that a larger move set is in store for our hero. Graphically, the glossy finish to the suits of both spider-men (Amazing and 2099) seem to be an improvement from last year, even though the engine of the game is the same. Again, this is not an “open-world” game, but focused more on combat and quick web-slinging as opposed to exploration.

Post-prologue level, the player is transported to the future, and Spider-Man 2099 makes his presence known. The plot, thus far, is played out through a great interactive credit sequence where you guide Miguel O’Hara (Spidey 2099) through the labs of the Alchemax Corporation in an attempt to discover what a man named Walker Sloan (voiced by Val Kilmer) wants with Alchemax. To summarize it quick, greed propels a man to change his future by altering the past, and hoping to knock out the competition.

Following the interactive credits, players begin to web-swing and zip line, collecting the essential gold spiders, orbs, and health upgrades necessary to keep both spider-men growing. By the time the first combat sequence is reached, a new and awesome addition to Spidey’s arsenal manifests itself; a quick button tap allows you to do a quick “decoy-like dodge” where you are able to move quickly past treacherous obstacles and projectiles.

With a story and dialogue by Peter David (the man who scribed the original Spider-Man 2099 comic book for Marvel in the 90’s), Edge of Time is shaping up nicely. There are a myriad of collectibles, challenges, and memos to collect throughout the game, and the more streamlined experience of two spider-men as opposed to four will hopefully tell a more cohesive story. I hope to have a full review forthcoming. With decision making affecting gameplay choices, Spider-Man: Edge of Time should provide players with another mighty Marvel adventure for the wall crawler to occupy himself with and give him a break from “Spider-Island…” not the ideal vacation spot mind you.

Playing the roles of the Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man: Edge of Time propels gamers on a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled adventure in which the heroic web-slingers must urgently work together across time to save each other and prevent a disaster that ultimately leads to the death of the Amazing Spider-Man. Against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran writer Peter David, the game features two individual timelines evolving in parallel, as well as “cause-and-effect” moments driven by the narrative. The game utilizes “picture-in-picture” moments where the actions of the Spider-Man in the present immediately affect the Spider-Man in the future and his surroundings.
