Mark Wahlberg again states that The Fighter 2 is indeed happening.

Mark Wahlberg first made mention of a sequel to The Fighter back in March on the Academy Awards red carpet. In a clip from the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards, Wahlberg said that The Fighter 2 is happening. In real life, Mickey Ward fought Arturo Gatti in three major fights beginning in 2002, emerging as the champion. This series of fights would be the focus of The Fighter sequel.

“We left out the Arturo Gatti fights for a reason,” Wahlberg announced, “Because that’s for ‘Fighter 2’. We’re not going to do ‘Fighter’ 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, but we’re gonna do 2. We’re gonna do the Ward/Gatti trilogy.”
