THE QUESTION: What release are you most looking forward to in the coming year and why?

Rob: I’m torn between two releases coming out in the next year. With Iron Man being my top movie pick of 2008, I’m very excited to see what has been done with Iron Man 2. The franchise has a ridiculous amount of momentum going into the sequel and I can’t wait to see War Machine tear it up.

My second pick would have to be God of War III. This will be the first time we get to see Kratos on a current generation console (excluding God of War Collection) and it’s a long time coming. The first two games were ground-breaking to the point where we’ve seen a large number of imitators trying to cash in on its success. As the third game in the trilogy, God of War III will also be wrapping up one of my favorite franchises in video game history.

Doug: The only thing on my radar right now is Iron Man 2. The first movie was terrific, and from the look of the previews, the sequel will be just as good. Robert Downey Jr.’s renaissance over the last few years has been a lot of fun to watch, and he’s finally found the stardom he was always destined for. Having told the origin story the last time around, director Jon Favreau is free to crowd the margins with more characters (Nick Fury! War Machine! Black Widow! Uh… Whiplash?) and from the Senate hearing shown in the trailer, it looks like he’s at least taking a stab at social relevance. If history is any guide, I’ll be blown away by how the sequel somehow topped the original, only to be crushed by disappointment when the inevitable crappy third installment is released.

Bryan: Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, Transformers: War on Cybertron

Brian: The release I am looking most forward to would be World of Warcraft’s expansion: Cataclysm. I have been playing WoW for quite a few years now, and with the addition of Cataclysm, a lot of the old world of Azeroth will be drastically changed!

Dave: Diablo 3, but I’m sure it will be pushed back to 2034 knowing Blizzard.

: Being recently ordained into the Order of Parenthood, my wife and I long for those nights when Grandma and GrandDad take our daughter for the evening, allowing us to spend some time together. We like to call it “Date Night“, which also happens to be the title of the release I’m most looking forward to this year.

Our “Ask the Staff” Question of the Week was to reveal which release (movie, TV show, video game, book, etc.) we’re looking forward to most in the coming year. Since I’m not much of a TV/video game guy, and I’m not looking forward to the next (and final) posthumously-released Michael Crichton novel, I scoured the Internet and trade magazines looking for which movies were due out this year. It looks to be a pretty bleak year for the cinema, but next month features the film “Date Night”, a comedy of mistaken identity starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey, two of today’s hottest comedic talents (and Tina Fey is HOT).

Carell and Fey play a suburban couple suffering the daily grind of work and marriage. Hilarity is sure to ensue as their date night goes awry when they pass themselves off as another couple at a trendy Manhattan bistro. The draw for me here isn’t so much the story or the cast, but the particular cast in this particular story. I think they can make it work. And, it is also that rare movie that both my wife and I are willing to see. So, yeah…I guess we’ll be that couple going to see “Date Night” on date night.
