When director Peter Jackson hired Benedict Cumberbatch to voice the dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the actor decided to provide an unnecessary motion-capture performance because as he says, it would help “characterize him (Smaug).”
A new WETA featurette on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug includes Benedict Cumberbatch providing a motion-capture performance for the dragon.
