Chris Evans has accepted the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming film The First Avenger: Captain America. The deal secures Evans in three Captain America films as well as the highly anticipated Marvel team-up, The Avengers.

The First Avenger: Captain America is slated for a July 22, 2011 release while The Avengers will hit the big screen on May 4, 2012. Evans will undoubtedly make cameo appearances in one or more Marvel films along the way.

On a related note, Hugo Weaving (known primarily as Agent Smith in The Matrix) will assume the role of Cap’s nemesis, the Red Skull.

  • I’ll admit, I’m not big on comic book lore and stuff, so take it easy on me guys.
But this guy played Johnny Storm in the Fantastic 4, correct?
And I thought the flamboyant / arrogance that went along with his character was pretty spot on.
Now, I would assume Captain America would be less “showy / arrogant” than the Human Torch, so I think casting this guy was maybe a mistake.
Evans already played a comic book hero in one series, it just doesn’t make any sense to me to have him portrayed as Capt. America.
But again, I don’t know comics enough to make any valid points, just opinions. =)

    • I always find it strange when actors start portraying multiple superheroes, and stranger when they’re doing so within the same comic universe. Not like I thought we’d ever see Captain America in a movie with the Fantastic Four, but this now makes it an impossibility without one of the roles being recast, which no one likes seeing.

My biggest concern that remains is when ‘The Avengers’ rolls around and we see Chris Evans attempting to boss around Robert Downey Jr. when RDJ will no doubt own the shared screen time.
