Show notes:
Hi. I am in the middle of listening to your Dark podcast on iHeartRadio, and I appreciate the thoughtfulness and insightfulness within the episodes. I can’t wait to finish your podcast so I can return to another viewing of Dark with new eyes.
I think it is interesting that in the podcast episodes, you seem to gloss over some of Katharina and Ulrich’s terribleness. Both of them are bullies as teenagers, and neither of them treat Hannah terribly well. So while Hannah does some things that bother me a lot, particularly when she accuses Ulrich of rape, I find her a sympathetic character because she obviously wants to fit in yet doesn’t. Katarina and Ulrich treat her like a child even though she is around their age. and despite everything, I think she loves Michael despite her obsession with Ulrich. The scene that gets me is when Michael is suffering and she stands behind him wrapping her arms around his chest. And I do believe that in the end, she gains a sense of autonomy and changes for many of the reasons you talked about in the podcast.
To be honest, I don’t think Katharina changes over much as an adult, especially considering the way she attacks adult Regina in the school. I know Katharina’s mother abused her, which is terrible, but I don’t believe that gives her a pass to be a bully and to continue that behavior as an adult. just as Hannah should not be given a pass for her bad behavior, neither should Katharina or Ulrich or Noah (who, incidentally, creeped me out until Season 3).
When it comes to the affair between Ulrich and Hannah, I find it interesting that Ulrich makes the first move. Does Hannah welcome that overture? Yes. Does she accept him? Definitely. But I think Ulrich is the true manipulator, knowing Hannah’s obsession for him and using it and using her. It’s funny: I find it more difficult to forgive Ulrich until he’s an old man than I do Hannah.
Thank you for reading this. I came about your podcast a bit late, which fills me with regret as this will be the only communication we can have, and it’s over a year after the fact. Thank you for this ability to have a conversation with you instead of talking to you in my living room. and thank you for the podcast . I’m looking forward to the episode related to Nietzsche, as I focused on some of his philosophies in my Master’s thesis. And, well, I have a huge crush on him. Yes, I am a nerd ! ?
I came back here long after listening to all of the episodes because I just missed it. Great to see that you were still working your way through..did you finish?
These women did such an amazing thing and one of the best aspects is that it was “conversational” and they invited other perspectives and alternatives like this.
I don’t know about you, but this show was fantastic for me but the complementary podcast made it iconic. 🙂
