I never make it through everything I hope to, but out of a planned 107 of last year’s releases, I managed to make it through 78, my best showing yet. So here’s the best of the best for 2011…


#10 – The Lincoln Lawyer – While I was originally turned off by a movie starring Matthew McConaughey as a lawyer, I’m happy to say this may have been the biggest surprise of the year for me. McConaughey and costar Ryan Phillippe are fantastic. The movie features a number of twists and turns that are well thought out and well executed.


#9 – Limitless – I was immediately drawn to the “what if?” premise of Limitless. Seemingly unlimited brain power in the palm of your hand? Sounds like every nerd’s dream. One foolish and forgotten subplot aside, Limitless is a crazy roller coaster ride from start to finish, so strap in and hold on tight. (full review)


#8 – Batman: Year One – For the second year in a row, DC Animated has delivered a top notch showing in their direct-to-DVD movies with Batman: Year One. Even more accurate to the source material than last year’s Under the Red Hood, Bryan Cranston lends his voice to Lt. Gordon, who takes us through one the most popular stories in Batman history.


#7 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – The final chapter in the saga of the “boy who lived”, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an epic and fitting end to a story cherished by millions throughout the world. The actors involved and the story itself has matured from a group of curious children on an adventure to warriors of the wizard-kind in the field of battle. The scale and drama required to finish a tale of this magnitude does not disappoint.


#6 – Thor – Comic fans everywhere had their doubts when they heard the Asgardian Thor would be coming to the big screen. A lot of those doubts started to fade when Kenneth Branagh took the reigns as director, and more still when the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Idris Elba entered the mix. While not without its faults, Thor not only proved comic fans wrong, but surpassed their expectations. (full review)


#5 – Take Me Home Tonight – It’s been said by Topher Grace that the goal of Take Me Home Tonight was not to spoof the 80’s, but to create a generational film similar to Dazed and Confused and American Graffiti, and quite frankly… they nailed it. If you lived through the 80’s or were a child of the 80’s, you’ll feel right at home in this timely tale of “boy gets girl.”


#4 – Source Code – The sophomore effort by director Duncan Jones, Source Code is a mystery as fast-paced as the train it takes place on, with unexpected turns lining the track ahead. While the plot focuses on a whodunit story, the movie evolves into creating an understanding and appreciation for every second of your life. (full review)


#3 – X-Men: First Class – The X-franchise took a turn for the worse with The Last Stand, but X-Men: First Class has not only saved the franchise, it also managed to top all of its predecessors. Featuring some of the best performances of the year from Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, First Class delivered a fantastic story that stayed true to the core message of the comics. #2 – Captain America: The First Avenger – Captain America: The First Avenger succeeded on so many levels where it could have faulted. It’s not an overly patriotic story holding the USA up on a pedestal. Instead, it’s the universal story of an underdog standing up against a bully. It offers just enough comic book “cheese” to make it extraordinary, but still grounds it in reality. (full review)


#1 – Super 8 – Character-driven mystery stories are where J.J. Abrams excels, and Super 8 is no different. While the mystery remains the driving force of the plot, the relationships between the kids, as well as their relationships with their parents, are the true focus of the film. Add to that the impressive performances from a group of young actors and the nostalgic Spielbergian score, and you’ve got yourself an instant classic. (full review)

X:Men: First Class was one of those movies that looked like it could go one of many ways. It could be good like X-Men, great like X2, or downright embarrassing like X-Men: The Last Stand. While I had high hopes, I feared that a cast of virtual unknowns in a prequel attached to the same franchise would result in another X-failure. I’m glad to report that not only is First Class great, it’s the best offering from an X-Men movie to date.

This is no doubt due in large part to the return of Bryan Singer, and the addition of Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn. Singer originally departed the franchise after X2 to take charge on Superman Returns. Whether or not you agree with the way that the X-movies reorganize some of the characters, Singer clearly understands the underlying message of the X-Men: acceptance and coexistence. No movie up to this point better illustrates that struggle better than First Class. Whether it be Xavier’s undying faith in humanity, Beast’s efforts to hide his mutation, or Mystique’s tug-of-war between the ideologies of Charles and Erik, the message rings loud and clear.

If there is a highlight in First Class, it has to be the performances of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, along with the relationship between their characters, Erik “Magneto” Lehnsherr and Professor Charles Xavier. In proper prequel fashion, backstory is given for each man to lay out their journey up to the point of crossing paths. Their respective journeys give ample motivation for each of their belief structures. Charles believes mutants and humans can coexist peacefully, while Erik has seen the darker side of humanity his entire life. Under certain circumstances, like the ones played out in First Class, it’s completely believable that the two could be practically brothers. Their complex relationship is the backbone of the movie and is reflected throughout so many of the characters and events that take place.

The roles of the remaining cast are filled fairly well. Kevin Bacon is a wonderfully sinister villain as the Hellfire Club’s Sebastian Shaw. Jennifer Lawrence is a complex, yet sympathetic Mystique. Each of the “First Class” mutants bring something unique to the table. The one disappointing performance was that of January Jones in the role of Emma Frost, who managed to transform a major character from the comics into that of a wooden marionette.

As there are few flaws to point out, it’d be a crime not to see a direct sequel. On a sidenote, First Class features what is perhaps the best movie cameo I’ve ever seen. I won’t spoil it for you here though.

Bottom Line: The best of the X-franchise features some great performances and stays true to the core message of the comics.

“I freaked out on them yesterday. I don’t know where the hell that came from. I don’t think it’s a Fox image. It’s not a pre-approved image. When I found out, I said, what the fuck is this shit, and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well. I agree. It’s like a bad photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it. I was like ‘Jesus Christ’…

Vaughn assures fans that he has the best intentions.

It has been confirmed that Nicholas Hoult (Clash of the Titans) will play Beast and Caleb Landry Jones (The Social Network) will play Banshee.

Surfer Erica Hosseini told Straight 2 DVD that she was auditioning for a part in the movie. “I was auditioning for a role named Willow (hopefully I don’t get in trouble for blabbing details on the off-chance that I get it). It’s a role similar to Mystique from what I understand. Potentially lots of body paint, so that would be really fun,” she said. Willow is a fictional mutant character created by Marvel Comics for their Marvel 2099 run “X-Nation 2099.” She had shape-shifting powers, much like Mystique, but when mimicking others her facial markings would remain.

Entertainment Weekly has reported that Lucas Till (Walk the Line) has joined the cast in the role of Cyclops’s mutant brother, Alexander “Havok” Summers. The article also points out that this news may be a purposeful misdirection by the studio in an attempt to keep some of the roles a surprise.

Deadline New York is reporting that Kevin Bacon (Frost/Nixon, Sleepers) is negotiating to play the villain role in X-Men: First Class. They don’t say who the villain may be.

The prequel is currently on the fast track with a release date set for June 3, 2011. This is just two weeks before Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern. Bryan Singer is producing with no cast currently announced.

X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.
