Copious collectibles abound in the newest iteration of the Spider-Man gaming franchise, which will keep gamers swinging for long days and hot summer nights.

Article by: Boyd

The Spider-Man gaming franchise has been rife with moments of excellence in story telling and pure gaming mechanic enjoyment. It has also been mired, at times, in poor story, flaccid programming and execution, and the “cash-in” factor like gamers need a Spidey game every year. In recent years, I remember a mixed bag of Peter Parker-esque adventure, with games like Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, Edge of Time, and Spider-Man 3: The Video Game. This year we receive the The Amazing Spider-Man across consoles to coincide with the release of the new theatrical film. And while it is a departure from the previous installments of Dimensions and Edge of time, I feel developer Beenox is treading, or trying, to recreate the magic that was cast in 2004 when Spider-Man 2 hit the Playstation 2. While it has its moments of awe, spectacle and grandeur on current consoles, at its core it remains a similar, but inferior version of Spider-Man 2.

Story/Presentation: Assuming the vast majority of individuals interested in this game have seen the film (MOVIE SPOILERS AHEAD), the game picks up immediately after the events of the movie. Oscorp industries has a new head in their science division to replace Dr. Curt Conners: Alistair Smythe, notorious in the Spider-Man mythos for his maniacal genius in creating the mechanical and menacing Spider-Slayers, constantly on the hunt for Spider-Man. Well, obviously changes had to be made in order to fit in with the film universe, so players can be prepared, without going into too much detail, to deal with many “cross-species” similar to the Lizard. At odds with these scientific abberations, Spider-Man has no choice but to enlist the aid of the incarcerated Curt Conners to help him take down the cross-species threat and the larger entity of Oscorp’s new science head. Mix in the elements of the sandbox world and gamers will spend a lot of time cruising and “thwip-ing” their way across Manhattan Island.

As a movie tie-in game, menus and load screens are pretty lackluster and standard licensed game fodder, with no flash or polish. Expect to see basic menu options on the main menu screen, and, while there are a wide variety of screens in game that act as upgrade screens and stat screens, once again, they are pretty basic and inert. Don’t expect the flash and production you’ve seen in games like Arkham City. Basic is basic, and Peter Parker deserves more to complement his genius in my opinion.

Gameplay: As previously mentioned, The Amazing Spider-Man hearkens back to the sandbox world of Spider-man 2: The Video Game and, to a degree, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. Players will spend a majority of their time swinging through side missions that involve stopping muggings, car chases, returning infected civilians to hospitals, and high flying race challenges to name a few. There are also, obviously, the story missions which number in 12. The combat system is an aped version that tries REALLY hard to be the one used in Batman: Arkham City… and it succeeds in certain aspects while failing miserably in others. Take for example the stealth mechanic: web up to a ceiling, get over an enemy, web them up quietly… except most of the time you get discovered and have to perform a quick escape, almost always. Annoying, but workable. The combat on the ground, however, is sometimes unworkable. As Spidey is attacked, a “spider-sense” alert icon appears above his head telling the player to execute a dodge, similar to the dodge mechanic used in Arkham City. The problem is it only works occasionally, and is very difficult to see when fighting close to 10 enemies. Add in the fact that projectile enemies force you to use a dodge to avoid being damaged and you have a combat system that is based more on baseline luck than control. Sadly, it makes for a lot of deaths and some very frustrating battles. While progressing through these story levels, there are a myriad of pick-ups that provide experience for Spidey and assist in upgrading his abilities and technology. Most of these pickups, however, are extremely difficult to locate, and judging by my first play through of the the game, I would not want to go back and play through the levels where I missed pickups. Also, let’s continue to ape Batman games and have audio log pickups similar to the tape reels in Arkham Asylum.

The meat of the game is not even the story missions. It’s the sandbox world that MADE ME want to go and complete every side mission, even if at times they are repetitive. I couldn’t even do this for Lego Batman 2. As a gamer, I ardently wished to complete every single mugging case, photographic case (there is a camera Spidey can utilize in order to photograph evidence and enemies to add to the extras portfolio on the extras screen), car chase, and infected citizen case out there. Swinging around Manhattan Island is great… except the swing mechanics aren’t exactly as polished as previous installments. The R2 trigger enables you to throw out webs… only if a building is in front of you. Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 negated that, and you were able to do a lot of upgradeable stunts with the X button in that one. In Amazing, web swinging is as basic as it gets. The best part of the game for me was picking up the 700 comics scattered about, unlocking FULL digital issues in the extras menu. That in my opinion was worth the price of admission, as the game is more exciting doing side quests than the actual story is.

Graphics: Above the city. the graphics and Spidey’s animation are superb… the attention to detail is definitely there. on the ground however, denizens of NYC and places like Central Park are muddy and bland, with a lot of graphical miscues and tearing. Environments inside missions are also nothing to write home about (I got stuck in a wall once while in a mission and had to reboot the PS3. Not exactly fine-tuned by play testing, eh Beenox/Activision?). In a nutshell, NYC up high looked great, but on the ground in mission environs, not so much. I would venture that the graphics on Shattered Dimensions were the benchmark for Spidey games of this era on current consoles.

Sound: The sound design is acceptable… and I say acceptable because of the voice cast. It’s good, but come on… no Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, or Rhys Ifans for the main cast members? This is terrible. Even Sega’s licensed Marvel games had Robert Downey Jr, Hemsworth, Evans, and such for their games, and Spider-Man is a far superior product than those games. The lack of Hollywood talent hurt the narrative of the story itself. Other than that, the sounds in NYC make you feel like you are in the thick of the city, and are pretty convincing for what they are worth. Dolby Digital/DTS support was a natural must as it stands.

Overall: The Amazing Spider-Man is better than your typical movie tie-in/licensed game, but it’s not Batman: Arkham Asylum/City, even though it tries to be. The sheer amount of collectible content, if you are invested, is enough to keep you playing. I played late at night, sometimes til 2 a.m., completed that main game and was still only about 80 percent done. There is a metric shit-ton of content and costumes, bios, etc. to unlock, and it can get crazy at times. It’s too bad the main story missions were not the highlight of this game. The side missions, collectibles and NYC sandbox world was. It’s hard for this gamer to figure out where the licensed Spidey games can go from this, since developers have reverted from the restricted world of Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time to a sandbox environment. I, for one, need something more innovative. In the meantime, for the movie epilogue which The Amazing Spider-Man is, I was happy to play for the 15-16 hours I did, but will probably never touch the game again. I want to see a virtual PSN store version of the original Spider-Man for the original Playstation, a landmark game in its own right, long before Arkham Asylum and City dominated the superhero game genre. Until then, rent The Amazing Spider-Man or purchase if on sale and satiate your craving for web swinging. But, let us see something more innovative in the future.

[xrr rating=7/10]

Positives:

+ Great open world side missions make you want to complete them

+ Tons of unlockables

Negatives:

– Poorly executed, Batman rip-off free flow combat

– Difficulty with projectile enemies

– Muddy graphics when not webswinging

About as fun as a headbutt from the Juggernaut, Destiny is about as paper thin as the graphics applied to the characters.

Article by: Boyd

About as fun as a headbutt from the Juggernaut (bitch), Destiny is about as paper thin as the graphics applied to the characters.

Marvel has one of the strongest licensing machines in video games, with a myriad list of classic characters and storylines that are perfectly adaptable to the arena of interactive games. We have been privy to some of the finer applications of these licenses, such as the fantastic X-Men Legends I and II, as well as the movie tie-in for Wolverine: Origins (all published by Activision). So why is it when I saw that X-Men: Destiny was slated for release in 2012 I was elated that we, the gamers, might be in for another fun romp through the Marvel universe… only to check back a few weeks later and see the release date pushed forward roughly 8 months (4 or 5 months earlier than the games originally planned release). So I entered the game cautiously, with the same trepidation the bachelor has on a first date.

Story: When the game began, I had a hard time trying to figure out where in the X-Men canon this game fit. Professor X is dead, as is Magneto (or so we are led to believe) at the hands of Bastion. In the current universe of the X-teams, their home base is San Francisco for the most part. They have, in the game at least, negotiated a peace with the Mutant Response Division and the game begins at a peace rally. Shortly thereafter, a terrorist attack hits the rally, at which point you are prompted to select a character and begin an adventure (I use this term loosely, mind you) to save the world or destroy it.

Gameplay: Once again, comic fans and gamers are given the promise of an action RPG by the developers. Destiny is really not an RPG at any length. The game is a bizarre mix of a third person brawler with trace elements of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance formula throw in with such elements as a minimap, collectible powers, and “buffs” that can be picked throughout, giving your character the same powers as some of the X-Men. This is one of the few cool things, swapping powers in and out. Offensive, Defensive, and Utility powers, as well as the costumed looks of the X-Men and Brotherhood leave a good degree of open ended customization, albeit poor in terms of execution. There is just not enough meat in the game to utilize all the power sets, and multiple playthroughs seem unlikely (we’ll get to that soon).

Unfortunately, the whole game involves not much substance at all. The familiar beat up the Purifiers (the games main antagonist), go to the next area, fight alongside the X-Men or Brotherhood, complete a challenge map, then have a boss brawl. The only real choices players have is participating in either Brotherhood or X-Men missions, and changing the alignment of your character meter from either X-Man or Brotherhood.

Combat is button mashing and a lousy combo system, a dodge button, and a poor jump button. Four basic combos round out standard combat, with a powered up, selectable move set becoming available as the game progresses, based on the choice of power selected at the beginning of the game. X-Mode super powers your character when you complete a suit set of X-genes. For example, a Juggernaut suit has 3 X-genes available to be equipped , unlocking a super powered X-Mode. All in all it sounds cool, but the execution is not. Most battles rely on mere button mashing, with some atrocious simple AI.

Boss battles range from simplistic, pattern based combat to infuriating. I can reference one Purifier boss that had the simplest pattern, but due to GOD AWFUL platforming, made it an ordeal by fire. You would think Silicon Knights/Activision would have learned something about platforming and jumping, considering they did it well in the SPIDER-MAN games Activision published. Sadly, the bosses in this game, while beatable, leave a lot to be desired.

Graphics and Sound: Graphics are about as paper thin as they get. That about sums it up. From a distance, I swore my PS3 had turned into a PS2 (I played Shadow of the Colossus Remastered concurrently with X-Men, and I swear a remastered PS2 game had better visuals). The typical background character animations are awful, and the X-Men/Brotherhood character models mediocre at best, in no way comparing to current generation, big budget game technology. The soundtrack was piss poor, with a mix of techno/house beats and thumping bass. One of the most irritating levels was the Chinatown level, with a low, droning sound and strings that made me have to turn down my digital sound to a low level. Add in the fact that the voices cut out quite a bit, due to shoddy programming or loading. (Which was which I couldn’t say). The 6 GB install on the PS3 didn’t help the game any either, as clearly it could have been run on a PS2.

Overall: X-Men: Destiny is yet another rushed superhero game from the Marvel license, and probably a game that is much worse than this summer’s offerings of both Green Lantern and Captain America. If you must play an X-Men game, RENT it please. Or, buy on sale for less than $30 like I did. C’mon Activision… you know better than this, as much as Silicon Knights (developer) should, since you made Eternal Darkness, the finest Gamecube gamer ever! An abysmal first playthrough wants me to teleport to the nearest frat party and kick a wannabe frat boy. It might be more fun.

[xrr rating=5/10]

Positive:

+ Customization of X-suits is about it

Negative:

– Um…

– Button mashing

– Graphics are subpar or worse

– Lacking story

– Hollow characters (although Milo Ventimiglia is pretty good in his role)

– Infuriating boss battles for the most part

– The worst platforming I have see since 8-bit days

An attempt to capture lightning in a bottle twice falls a bit short.

Article by: Boyd

Last year, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions returned our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to greatness with a lengthy, streamlined crawl that brought the visions of four different universes to fruition on next-gen consoles. This years follow up, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, unfortunately stumbles a few times in an attempt to capture the formula which made last year’s game the hit it was. In fact, it stumbles to the point that sometimes you would swear Peter Parker and Miguel O’Hara shared a few drinks before embarking on this adventure to save two parallel realities from ultimate destruction.

Plot: In order to keep would-be players in suspense, the storyline of Edge of Time (written by veteran Spider-Man 2099 scribe Peter David) revolves around the present and the future of the Amazing Spider-Man universe, and that of his counterpart, Spider-Man 2099. Walker Sloan, an Alchemax employee of the future, attempts to alter his reality by going back in time to found Alchemax. Sloan succeeds, and the time line is altered, leading to an alternate New York being created. It’s time for both Spider-Men to swing into action and fix what has been done.

Overall, the story serves its purpose, with what seems like a lot of heavy research done in order to give fan service to loyal Marvel fans of both Spider-Men. I enjoyed the telling, and the voice actors really added a flair to some of the dialogue, primarily Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spidey 2099), who voiced the Amazing Spider-Man in the 1990’s cartoon.

Gameplay: With last year’s game revolving around 4 different universes, Edge of Time attempts to streamline the players experience with two Spider-Men, and two upgradeable move sets. Collecting orbs and large experience boosts enable the player to customize each character, with a third shared move set providing basic moves for both Spider-Men. Unfortunately, with all the upgrading and moves, I found myself focusing more on hammering the square and triangle button to defeat enemies, while using my decoy or acceleration (both dodge-style moves) to take out enemies. In essence, glorified button mashing. This is fine for a game of this type, but why bother with the elaborate move sets? Never did I find myself using at least half of the moves I upgraded, compared to last year where I used just about everything in Shattered Dimensions. Aside from orbs, golden spider tokens make their return to upgrade abilities such as acceleration and decoy, health meter, and health regeneration.

Combat, as stated, is a bit of a button mash festival against the typical small, medium, and large groups of minions Alchemax throws at you. Finding your groove in combat, you can rack up some impressive combos (past 200 hits) in tandem with your decoy, acceleration, and web zip smash. The problem is, when playing as Spidey 2099, I felt overpowered against enemies, given he has a shield that absorbs hits and his attacks generated more damage than the Amazing’s did. The biggest disappointment was, however, that there was no opportunity to choose a path where actions in the past or future change anything. You essentially just play through the sixteen chapters, alternating between both Spider-Men, until you reach the end. The overall challenge of the game was a bit lacking, with some really frustrating enemy encounters. By far the worst were the free fall sequences when playing as 2099, with poor collision detection and imprecise control at times.

Replayability: If you enjoy beating the same enemies over and over again, a second play through might be warranted. The meat of the game is really in the web of challenges, where medals can be earned. Silver or Gold will earn you unlocks such as concept art and costumes, as well as golden spiders that unlock character abilities. The real incentive to do well in the challenges and earn at least silver medals is the myriad of costumes, ranging from Spidey’s “Future Foundation”, “Big TIme”, “Spider Armor” and “1602.” The list is huge with over thirteen costumes to unlock. A hard mode opens up once you beat the game, but you’ll still be fighting the same enemies over and over again.

Overall: Edge of Time is ultimately a button mashing beat ’em up that attempts to capture the essence of Shattered Dimensions from last year. While it does a good job with dialogue and storytelling, the gameplay is just lacking. Add in the frustrating free fall sequences, and you don’t have the worthy successor to Shattered Dimensions. That being said, the web of challenges and unlockable costumes definitely give fan service to die-hard Spider-Man fans. Unfortunately, with the fall gaming season in full swing, people may not be apt to picking this one up because of all the other top shelf games coming out (Arkham City, anyone?) For the casual player, Edge of Time is a good weekend diversion, but I recommend only making the purchase if you are the Chameleon and just robbed a bank, and want to part quickly with your gaming dollar.

Positive:
+ Good story
+ Web of Challenges
+ Huge unlockable costume selection

Negative:
– Repetitive enemies
– Free fall sequences
– Lack of challenge
– Short story length

Spider-Man: Edge of Time hit store shelves yesterday. Mike Boyd offers his first impressions.

Last year’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was arguably one of the finer entries into the vast pantheon of Spidey-themed video games. In my very recent memory it was one of the best, melding together the multiple universes that exist for the character (Ultimate, 2099, Noir, and Amazing). Now, a year later Activision brings us Spider-Man: Edge of Time, an update attempting to correct some of the flaws first showcased in the previous entry. Here are my first impressions from the first 25 minutes of gameplay.

Edge of Time starts out with a bang, and without spoiling any of the plot, I’ll just say pressing the start button hurls you into combat with Anti-Venom (Eddie Brock). The brief glimpse of combat I caught here seems to be a marked improvement from the last game, and I can tell that a larger move set is in store for our hero. Graphically, the glossy finish to the suits of both spider-men (Amazing and 2099) seem to be an improvement from last year, even though the engine of the game is the same. Again, this is not an “open-world” game, but focused more on combat and quick web-slinging as opposed to exploration.

Post-prologue level, the player is transported to the future, and Spider-Man 2099 makes his presence known. The plot, thus far, is played out through a great interactive credit sequence where you guide Miguel O’Hara (Spidey 2099) through the labs of the Alchemax Corporation in an attempt to discover what a man named Walker Sloan (voiced by Val Kilmer) wants with Alchemax. To summarize it quick, greed propels a man to change his future by altering the past, and hoping to knock out the competition.

Following the interactive credits, players begin to web-swing and zip line, collecting the essential gold spiders, orbs, and health upgrades necessary to keep both spider-men growing. By the time the first combat sequence is reached, a new and awesome addition to Spidey’s arsenal manifests itself; a quick button tap allows you to do a quick “decoy-like dodge” where you are able to move quickly past treacherous obstacles and projectiles.

With a story and dialogue by Peter David (the man who scribed the original Spider-Man 2099 comic book for Marvel in the 90’s), Edge of Time is shaping up nicely. There are a myriad of collectibles, challenges, and memos to collect throughout the game, and the more streamlined experience of two spider-men as opposed to four will hopefully tell a more cohesive story. I hope to have a full review forthcoming. With decision making affecting gameplay choices, Spider-Man: Edge of Time should provide players with another mighty Marvel adventure for the wall crawler to occupy himself with and give him a break from “Spider-Island…” not the ideal vacation spot mind you.

Activision has revealed the Comic-Con trailer for Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

Activision has revealed the Comic-Con trailer for Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

Playing the roles of the Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man: Edge of Time propels gamers on a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled adventure in which the heroic web-slingers must urgently work together across time to save each other and prevent a disaster that ultimately leads to the death of the Amazing Spider-Man. Against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran writer Peter David, the game features two individual timelines evolving in parallel, as well as “cause-and-effect” moments driven by the narrative. The game utilizes “picture-in-picture” moments where the actions of the Spider-Man in the present immediately affect the Spider-Man in the future and his surroundings.

Activision Publishing, Inc. and Marvel Entertainment have announced Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

Activision Publishing and Marvel Entertainment have announced Spider-Man: Edge of Time, where Spider-Man faces one of his greatest challenges ever — saving Spider-Man. Developed by Activision-owned studio Beenox, Spider-Man: Edge of Time challenges the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker.

“The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was touted as one of the wall-crawler’s best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans,” said Vicharin Vadakan, Director, Global Brand Management. “Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a fast-paced and high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time.”

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said Dee Brown, Studio Head, Beenox. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.”

Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099). The game features all-new “cause-and-effect” gameplay, where players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is slated for release this fall.

Activision/Blizzard announced today that the Guitar Hero franchise has come to an end.

According to the company’s financial statement, “Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.”

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg added some more insight into the company’s attention shift away from the music genre, explaining that even though DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock were well-received, “demand for peripheral-based music games declined at a dramatic pace.” He continued, “Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics and demand.” However, Activision will continue to support its existing music games with DLC.

Come get that vaguely familiar feeling of the full track list for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

Ah yes, the latest Guitar Hero track list has been revealed, this time for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. It bares a striking resemblance to every other Guitar Hero track list we’ve seen before. It’s not that the songs are identical to other lists, but the types of songs are. We have the generally awesome tracks (Anberlin – “The Feel Good Drag”, Bush – “Machinehead”, Rise Against – “Savior”), the obscure tracks by popular artists chosen instead of something we really love (Soundgarden – “Black Rain”, Linkin Park – “Bleed It Out”, Foo Fighters – “No Way Back”), the who-the-hell-is-this-band tracks (Buzzcocks – “What Do I Get?”, The Dillinger Escape Plan – “Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants”, Orianthi – “Suffocated”), the live tracks that we wish were just the studio version (Def Leppard – “Pour Some Sugar On Me (Live)”, Metallica & Ozzy Osbourne – “Paranoid (Live)”, ZZ Top – “Sharp Dressed Man (Live)”), and of course, the one track that we’ll never ever play because it makes our ears bleed and our souls die (R.E.M. – “Losing My Religion”).

See for yourself:

Nintendo Power has the scoop on the latest in the Guitar Hero franchise, 'Warriors of Rock'.

Nintendo Power has the scoop on the latest in the Guitar Hero franchise, Warriors of Rock. According to Neversoft’s Brian Bright, Warriors of Rock will retain “all the cool features” from Guitar Hero 5, including the ability to play with any combination of instruments. This time around, however, the team strove to “hand-pick” the songs, which will focus on “guitar-centric rock ‘n’ roll” as Bright explained that “so many more people play Guitar Hero on guitar than any other instrument.”

Picking up on the rock focus, the game’s story and aesthetics revolve around heavy metal. Bright mentioned being inspired by heavy metal album covers “with rivers of chrome and guys on horses with bat wings and stuff.” In fact, the game’s quest mode is narrated by Gene Simmons and tells the story of the struggle between “the Beast” and “the demigod of rock.” Said demigod is defeated, so it’s up to players to find the demigod’s legendary guitar and amass “an army of warriors to be able to defeat the beast.”

Activision has confirmed that 'Guitar Hero 6' and a new 'DJ Hero' game are both on the way.

Activision has confirmed on an earnings call recently that Guitar Hero 6 will be on store shelves sometime this fall, with a new DJ Hero game coming soon after. The music game market is a changing place, admitted CEO Bobby Kotick — it will “continue to compress,” with fewer titles and brands finding success. Activision has “moved from the sell-through of higher-priced peripherals,” and its new plan is for “improved economics on a higher percentage of software sales.”

Kotick said that Guitar Hero “remains the leader in the category with more than 44 million games sold to date,” and that both releases this year would be followed with “a full lineup of exciting downloadable content.”
