Comic book movies continue to be the dominant force in cinema, with a large number of DC and Marvel characters having been turned into television shows and games such as those you can find on http://www.gamblinginsider.ca, as well as films. This article will look at which of their spin-off movies have grossed the most at the box office.
5. $1.004 billion – The Dark Knight
The plot of this 2008 film sees Christian Bale’s Batman trying to save Gotham from the chaos wrought by sadistic killer The Joker – played by Heath Ledger. Despite its daringly dark tone, it broke numerous box office records, including the most money made in week of release and went on to become the biggest grossing film of 2008 – topping box office charts around the world.
4. $1.084 billion – The Dark Knight Rises
The second Nolan Batman movie saw Bruce Wayne mourning the loss of his love Rachel Dawes, who died in the previous film, before being forced back into the bat suit after Bane – portrayed by Tom Hardy – captured control of Gotham. Also featuring Anne Hathaway, the movie did not set the records of its predecessor, but still wound up as the highest grossing Batman film of all in the end.
3. $1.215 billion – Iron Man 3
The Iron Man franchise has been box office gold, due to the performances of Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man. The 2013 third film saw him confronted by terrorist The Mandarin – Ben Kingsley – who destroys his entire world and forces him into hiding to fight back. It was the biggest Iron Man film at the box office, earning $409.013.994 in the US alone and becoming the tenth biggest worldwide success ever.
2. $1.405 billion – Avengers: Age of Ultron
The second Avengers movie was released in 2015 and saw the team having to unite against Wanda and Pietro Maximoff and tech terror Ultron. It brought in $459.005.868 domestically and was a massive success overseas – eventually making the fourth most money worldwide that year.
1. $1.519 billion – Avengers
This 2012 movie was the first to unite Marvel’s top superheroes. The plot saw them take on Thor’s adopted brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, who has stolen the Tesseract and secured unlimited power. It smashed the Saturday box office record set by Spider-Man 3 and the opening Sunday record of the Dark Knight – becoming the highest grossing opening weekend ever. It is still the highest grossing film to open in May and enjoyed a domestic gross of $623.357.910.
With films like Justice League and Wonder Woman to come, the superhero box office boom will continue, but will any of these make future lists of this kind?
